Areas like Zhongshan are extremely busy and crowded, but offer a lot of comfort and sightseeing, while Banqiao is a less touristy area outside the city which can be a great base for families who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the somewhat chaotic city of Taipei.

How to get around in Taipei with family?
Without a doubt, the best and easiest way to get around the city is by metro.
With over a hundred stations spread all over the city, this world-class transit system is hard to compete against.
You can choose either the EasyCard, which is a contactless payment card that can be bought at metro stations as well as supermarkets, or the Taipei Card, which offers unlimited rides for both the MRT and busses.
The latter is convenient, although you won’t be using busses as the metro lines take you to all the important attractions the city has to offer.

1. Zhongshan
Zhongshan is without a doubt the most popular area to stay at among tourists and families are no exception.
One of the reasons why it’s such a convenient area is that it’s home to Tapei’s Main Station, which allows you to move to every corner of the city without much hassle.
Especially when traveling with kids, the last thing you want is to walk from one landmark to the other.
But this area is also home to several city highlights, such as Taipei Botanical Garden, the Logshan Temple, the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Liberty Square, and the Nanjichang Night Market.
One of the drawbacks of Zhongshan among younger travellers is the fact that during the evening, it’s not that bustling.
This can be a great benefit for families who want to stay in a central area where it’s relatively calm during the evening in a chaotic city like Taipei.
And if you do want to visit the more vibrant areas in the evening, the Main Station is just around the corner.
As it’s such a popular area, there is an abundance of hotels in various budget classes.
The only thing is that finding budget-friendly accommodation for the whole family can be a bit challenging and there is another area that is far better than that.
Advantages: central location with perfect access to public transport, several highlights nearby, laid-back atmosphere, good variation of hotels.
Disadvantages: there is not much to do in the evening (which can also be an advantage), the budget-minded traveller does have a few options but not many.

2. Shilin
Shilin is one of the great alternatives to Zhongshan. It’s a large area in the northern parts of Taipei and is home to the famous Shilin Night Market, the largest night market in the city where countless visitors come to devour amazing street food.
And around this area, it can get crowded.
However, as it’s such a large area and it’s connected to Yangmingshan National Park, you have spacious and laid-back neighborhoods too where you can find several hiking trails.
One of these trails is the Tianmu Historic Trail, which is highly recommended to explore.
There are several city highlights in the area, aside from the famous night market, including the National Palace Museum and the Shilin Sheong Temple.
Most importantly, you have great access to public transport to reach the other important parts of the city.
Just keep in mind the further you stay north, the more difficult it is to access the metro, so make sure to pick a hotel that is within walking distance from one of the metro lines.
Advantages: some parts of this area are relatively quiet, access to Yangmingshan National Park and several hiking trails, home to the famous Shilin Night Market, great access to public transport unless you stay too far north.
Disadvantages: when you want to avoid all the crowded areas, your access to public transport becomes more limited.
