If you’re planning a trip to Albufeira, one of the Algarve’s most popular beach towns, you’ve probably come across the debate: Old Town vs New Town?
They’re only a short distance apart – you can walk between them in 20 minutes – but the vibes are completely different.
I’ve stayed in both and explored them plenty, and trust me, where you base yourself can shape your whole experience.
Here’s the lowdown to help you choose between the two.
Old Town Albufeira is exactly what you’d hope for from a historic coastal village in southern Portugal.
Think cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, cute cafés, and a lovely main square that lights up in the evening with live music and relaxed energy.
It’s the heart of Albufeira’s charm and the reason many visitors fall in love with this town.
The beach here, Praia dos Pescadores, is wide and beautiful, and just steps from most of the restaurants and accommodations.
Everything is within walking distance: bars, gelato shops, rooftop terraces, and even the escalator that takes you up to a panoramic viewpoint over the town.
The atmosphere in Old Town is relaxed but lively.
There’s definitely nightlife here, including street performers, outdoor bars, and some clubs, but it’s not rowdy.
It’s more of a dinner-with-wine-followed-by-cocktails kind of vibe.
You’ll find plenty of families, couples, and travelers of all ages enjoying the evenings out.
If you’re into culture, history, and walkable charm, Old Town is the better choice.
That said, during peak summer months, it gets busy.
Not crazy like New Town, but it’s a hotspot, so book early if you want to stay in the heart of it all.
If Old Town is the romantic side of Albufeira, New Town is the wild child.
Centered around The Strip, this area is packed with bars, clubs, late-night takeaways, and younger travelers ready to party until sunrise.
If you’re coming for nightlife, this is where you want to be.
During the day, New Town is surprisingly quiet.
You’ll find modern hotels, all-inclusive resorts, and a few chilled cafés.
But as the sun goes down, the Strip wakes up: flashing lights, DJs, pub crawls, and drink deals everywhere you look.
It’s popular with groups, stag/hen dos, and party-focused holidays.
The beach here, Praia da Oura, is lovely and has a livelier vibe than the beach by Old Town.
It’s still scenic, but expect beach bars and a more active crowd.
You’re a bit further from Albufeira’s historical charm, but it’s just a short taxi or TukTuk ride away.
New Town offers more modern accommodation, usually at lower prices, especially for groups.
Just know what you’re signing up for: if you’re not into nightlife or loud evenings, this might not be the area for you.

At the end of the day, they’re close enough to experience both, so you don’t have to miss out.
But where you sleep matters. If you’re all about peaceful mornings and scenic cafés, go for Old Town.
If you’re here for long nights and loud laughs, New Town has your name on it.
