Each area has its own unique atmosphere, as well as its own pros and cons, which we’ll explain in more detail below.

The best areas to stay in Phuket first time are Kamala, Nai Yang and Mai Khao, Patong, Kata, Karon, and Rawai.
Each of these recommended areas caters to a different type of traveler, from luxury travelers, families, or budget travelers to party-loving, hedonistic travelers.
There is one area in Phuket that is a bit of a challenge. This area is Phuket Old Town.
As beautiful and exciting as it is, especially at night, there is no direct access to the beach that most travelers seek.
If you’re staying at least a week and are willing to stay in a few different locations (one or two) throughout Phuket, then this part of Phuket is ideal for a night or two.
But you wouldn’t fly to a large tropical island without beach access.
Below, we’ll detail each of these recommended areas to help you decide which one is best for you.

Kamala – Popular tourist area, suitable for couples, relaxed atmosphere, more central location, hotels in all budget categories, excellent beach.
Nai Yang and Mai Khao – Some of the most luxurious and comfortable hotels with all the facilities you could dream of, an ideal area for families and couples.
Patong – The epicenter of Phuket’s nightlife with countless bars and clubs in the middle of the island.
Kata – Beautiful beach, quiet area, central location that attracts families and couples.
Karon – This part of Phuket still has a local feel, plenty of affordable but also good quality hotels and an excellent beach.
Rawai – Great alternative area away from the crowds with many local restaurants and centrally located even though it is not a real beach.
Often described as Phuket’s most family-friendly beach, Kamala Beach is the ideal area for first-time visitors to Phuket because it offers a wide range of affordable hotels, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and is centrally located with easy access to the island’s highlights.
This area is surrounded by two mountains, giving it a more secluded feel.
Life in Kamala is slow-paced, attracting retirees, tourists with children, and couples, but the area is anything but boring.
Kamala has recently become more popular, and new hotels are being built rapidly, but the relaxed atmosphere remains (for now).
Kamala is more of a small town than a part of Phuket.
There are many authentic local restaurants to discover, and in the evening, you can easily find a nice beach bar.
But this is nothing compared to neighboring Patong, which mainly attracts younger travelers.
For whom: Families and couples.
Pros: Popular tourist area, suitable for couples, relaxed atmosphere, more central location, hotels in all budget categories, excellent beaches.
Cons: Relatively quiet, not attractive to young travelers who enjoy nightlife.
Transportation: Central location, good transport links for sightseeing.
Phuket has many things to offer. Aside from the standard beach activities, it's home to a historic old town, which you should definitely explore (during the weekends).
Located directly below Phuket International Airport on the west side of the island, Nai Yang is a peaceful area with several luxury hotels.
Due to its location, renting a car is highly recommended if you want to get around easily.
There are hotels in several budget categories.
Keep in mind that Nai Yang is a quiet area, away from public facilities.
Its isolation makes it unique, but if you’re looking for a livelier area, we recommend staying elsewhere.
For an even more secluded vacation, discover Mai Khao, the area north of Nai Yang.
Here you’ll find fantastic hotels and beach clubs, ideal for that romantic atmosphere.
Who it’s for: Luxury travelers, often families and couples.
Pros: Some of the most luxurious hotels with all the facilities you could dream of.
Cons: Far from the island’s highlights.
Mobility: Renting a car is highly recommended if you plan to explore the island. Taxis are not always easy to find at night.
Aside from the Old Town, other highlights include The Big Buddha and Wat Chalong.
For young travelers and those who love to party, Patong is the best place to stay for their first time in Phuket.
As it’s one of the busiest and most touristy areas, all amenities are easily accessible.
Patong is the epicenter of the island and boasts a three-kilometer-long beach where you can find all kinds of water activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, and windsurfing.
If you’re coming to Phuket to relax and enjoy a quiet vacation, you should definitely avoid Patong.
Also, Patong doesn’t have the most beautiful beach, but it’s good enough for sunbathing and water activities.
Furthermore, many young travelers often rent motorbikes or find other means of transportation to enjoy the beautiful nearby beaches.
Patong’s main attraction is Bangla Road.
At the end of the day and especially at night, this Walking Street is the epicenter of Phuket’s nightlife, with all kinds of bars and clubs, including a red-light district.
Patong is by far the most touristy area on the island, with numerous restaurants, bars, and activities to satisfy the hedonistic traveler.
It has a relaxed atmosphere, and due to its tourist scene, many tourists either hate it or simply love it.
For whom: Young, party-loving, hedonistic travelers.
Pros: Right in the epicenter of the island.
Cons: Not for everyone. If you don’t like nightlife and drunken tourists, avoid this area at all costs.
Transportation: Plenty of taxis and other means of transportation are available. Young travelers often rent motorbikes to visit the beaches and other tourist sites.
Sunsets are amazing on Phuket and Phromtep Cape is the ideal sport to catch a beautiful view at dawn. But all the beaches on the westside of the island offer nice views (especially with an ice cold beer in your hand).
Kata Beach primarily attracts families and couples due to its tranquility compared to areas like Patong.
Also noteworthy is the white sand and crystal-clear water, ideal for snorkeling.
In addition to its beautiful beach, which can get very busy, there are many spas in this area as well as a night market.
Similar to neighboring Karon Beach, Kata Beach is centrally located, close to the island’s highlights such as Karon Viewpoint, the Big Buddha of Mingmongkol, and Promthep Cape.
For those looking for nightlife, head to Patong in the evening, which is only a ten-minute drive away, although you can find some nice spots on Kata Beach itself.
In the evening, Kata Beach has a few nice bars near the beach, making it ideal for couples and families as it is not close to Patong.
On the other hand, Kata Beach is known for its relative tranquility.

Pros: Beautiful beach, good location.
Cons: It is known for its quietness, which can be an advantage or a disadvantage.
Transportation: Located in the center of the island’s west coast, numerous means of transportation are available.
Street art and vintage stores can be found at Phuket's Old Town, a great spot to wander around when the temperature is more reasonable.
Karon is a popular area of Phuket for first-time visitors because it’s centrally located yet offers a secluded atmosphere.
Those looking for a lively area should consider staying at Karon Beach as it’s relatively quiet.
Karon is a great area for travelers on a tighter budget, but in general, it’s a popular area for families and couples.
There are many local restaurants to explore, and the beach is beautiful. There are a few spots open in the evening, but it’s definitely not a popular nightlife area. During the day, you can find all kinds of activities in this area, from snorkeling, diving, and surfing to parasailing.
The beach itself is one of the longest on the island and is ideal for a beautiful stroll, but also for water sports. Due to its size, you have plenty of space on the beach.
Karon is located below Patong, so for those looking to spend a night in Phuket, a short taxi ride will take you to the epicenter.
Who it’s for: Families and couples (on a budget)
Pros: Still has a local atmosphere, plenty of budget-friendly but also good hotels, and an excellent beach.
Cons: Relatively quiet, which can be good or bad.
Transportation: Centrally located with the island’s highlights nearby.
Although most travelers tend to stay on the west coast of Phuket, there are other areas you might want to consider.
While we don’t recommend staying in Phuket Old Town, an alternative is to stay on Rawai Beach.
This area is developed but is often overlooked by tourists.
In this area, you’ll find many nice bars, restaurants, and cafes without being bothered by too many tourists (by Phuket standards), giving you that pleasant local feel.
However, the beach isn’t very beautiful because it’s rocky and full of fishing boats, which is one of the reasons tourists tend to avoid Rawai.
You have to travel to get to a more decent beach (that’s the price you pay).
But the abundance of good restaurants more than makes up for it.
There’s actually plenty of nightlife to experience, and it’s much more relaxed than in Patong.
In other words, you won’t be bored.
And what’s more, you’re not that far from the island’s highlights.
For whom: Travelers looking for unusual places.
Pros: Plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes, not too many tourists compared to other areas.
