Choosing where to stay in Cinque Terre can be tough, especially when you’re deciding between Riomaggiore vs Monterosso al Mare.
Both villages are incredibly beautiful, but they offer very different experiences.
I’ve stayed in both, and depending on your travel style, one might suit you better than the other.

Riomaggiore is the first village you reach when coming from La Spezia by train.
It’s also one of the most photogenic places in all of Italy.
The colorful houses stacked up along a narrow gorge, the tiny harbor, and the dramatic cliffs make it feel straight out of a painting.
This is the spot to stay if you’re after that romantic, quiet Cinque Terre experience.
Riomaggiore is small and walkable, though very steep.
You’ll definitely be climbing stairs, so pack light and be ready for a workout.
That being said, the views from the top are absolutely worth it.
The vibe here is slower and more intimate.
There are a few great seafood restaurants, cozy wine bars, and a peaceful harbor where you can watch the sun go down.
Riomaggiore also has access to boat tours and kayak rentals if you want to see the villages from the water.
The famous Via dell’Amore trail used to connect Riomaggiore to Manarola, and although parts of it are currently closed, this section of Cinque Terre still has fantastic hiking routes nearby.
What Riomaggiore lacks is a beach.
You’ll find a small rocky cove where you can take a dip, but it’s not ideal if you’re dreaming of lounging by the sea.
The village is also very quiet at night. If you’re looking for nightlife or variety, this might feel too sleepy.
If Riomaggiore is the romantic escape, Monterosso is the practical and beach-friendly base.
It’s the largest of the five villages and the only one with a proper sandy beach.
That makes a big difference, especially if you’re traveling with kids or you just want to relax by the water between hikes.
Monterosso is split into two parts: the old town, which has the same charm as the other villages, and the newer part along the beach, which feels more modern and resort-like.
You’ll find more hotels here than in any other village, including larger ones with air conditioning and better accessibility.
That makes Monterosso great for families, older travelers, or anyone who wants a few more creature comforts.
There are plenty of restaurants, cafés, and bars.
The village has a lively evening scene compared to the quieter towns like Riomaggiore or Corniglia.
While it doesn’t have the same postcard look as Riomaggiore or Manarola, it’s still incredibly charming in its own way.
Being located at the far end of the Cinque Terre line, Monterosso is also a good starting or ending point for the popular hiking trails.
It’s flat for the most part, so it’s easier to get around with luggage, which is a huge plus in Cinque Terre.
